Weather Extremes Archive (WEXA)

A team of experts in climate dynamics has prepared an archive of extreme weather events detected worldwide since 1979. This archive is hosted at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and updated regularly. Events are identified based on the occurrence of persistent and anomalously high or low surface temperature conditions that are classified as either heat waves or cold spells (see methods for more details).

Extreme events from 2020 onward are documented on their own webpages, while events spanning the full 1979–present detection period can be explored through an interactive extreme event analysis tool. Our data are accessible in various forms.
